David Carson

David Carson was born September 8th, 1952 in Corpus Christi, Texas. Four years later Carson and his family moved to New York. After moving to New York Carson has constantly moved around the globe, but has always thought as New York as his home. Carson now owns two studios; one in New York and another in Charleston, south carolina. Because of Carsons’ Farther he has constantly had to travel all over America. Carsons’ talents showed through at a very young age, although his first contaract with graphic design was made in 1980 at the university of Arizona on a two week graphic course. He also attendied San Diego St university, as well as Oregon College of Commercial Art. In 1983 he went to Switzerland where he attended a three-week workshop in graphic design as part of his degree. In any case this is where he met his first great influence Hans-Rudolph Lutz. David Carson as an art director of surfing magazines and more famously style magazine Ray Gun (1992-5), Carson came to worldwide attention.

Neville Brody

Neville Brody is a graphic designer born April 23 1957 in London.He studied at Hammersmith College of art. He is well known for his work on the face magazine from 1981–1986. Neville Brody also designs record covers for artists such as Caberet Voltaire and Depeche Mode. He was also a member of FontWorks in London, thus designing many different typefaces.

This piece was designed my Neville Brody; I would first like to talk about the layout of the text. To start with, the text is a san-serif style making it a simple font, the layout of the text on the other hand would seem to be more complex making it harder to read. This makes the advertisement more interesting thus making it more appealing to its target audience. The imagery is very simple as it only has one image. The image itself is very simple as it is a close up of a man’s face, but is covered up by big bold white letters. The colour in this advertisement is also very simple, it uses black and white very effectively, and has one phrase coloured in red to match the logo.
In my personal response, I think this advertisement is quite effective. The layout of the text is very interesting it gives of an appealing attitude towards the advertisement.

This piece uses very simple colours, as it is a black and white piece. The imagery is also very simple as it has only one image of a man. In the background of this piece, it has a symbol that represents a T and W; I think the main point to this T W shaped symbol is to take up space so that there is not as much white showing in the background. The title is done in big bold black letters apart from the first and last three letters that are in a normal font. I do not practically like this piece, as it seems too boring in my opinion; it isn’t very visually appealing so it lacks the interest it needs to catch the eye of its readers.

This piece uses a simple set of background colours such as black and white and then busies things up with a bold red and yellow lettering style, with a side colour of blue. This piece is very visually appealing so it would catch the eye of its target audience with the slightest of ease. This piece is very interesting as you can obviously see that the background image has been painted. Most front covers would use some sort of photograph but Neville Brody has decided that he would prefer a hand done painting. This technique isn’t often done so it makes this piece even more visually appealing. I think this piece is quite successful as the title is very big bright and bold it immediately draws your attention to the piece. After gazing at the title you are then further drawn in by the image in overall this piece does its job successfully.

David Carson who is well known for his confusing and outrages lettering styles designed this piece. As you can see this piece virtually has no writing, and the little writing it does have has been crammed to one side in a little font making it a lot harder to read. The title “Sonic Youth” has been unnecessarily complicated as the word “Sonic” has the letters O and N overlapping and the same with “Youth” the letters Y and O have also been overlapped. The imagery in this piece covers the entire page the main colours of the image is an orange and yellow. To the right there is an outline of a man looking at the sunset.
I think this piece would definitely catch the reader’s eye. With one gaze, you could not resist but being intrigued by this overwhelming imagery. I think this piece is mainly for visual aspects and not so much for information as there is little information on this page. Therefore, in my opinion I would say it is successful in the sense of it being a visual page.

Since this piece is done my David Carson. It is quite complex in the area of text. For a start, the text is done in different sizes, which makes them overlap, and to add to this effect the text is going in different directions some diagonal and some straight. As the text is completely uneven, it seems to make the shape of a question mark. The main colour in this piece is white; the Nike logo on the other hand is in a small square box of red that makes it stand out above all ells. The imagery in this piece is incredibly simple as there is only two images one of a trainer and the other of a tiny picture of a man. In my opinion I think this piece is quite simple apart from the unnecessarily complexion of text. I do not think this piece is eye catching as there isn’t much to it but. The interesting layout of text might intrigue a few people thus making them read this advertisement.

This piece as you can see has a very random layout for the title. This effect makes the reader have to do a lot of unnecessary work in figuring out what the title even says than an average title. Part of the title is in huge bold letters, and the rest of the title is in a slightly smaller font the entire title is spread out and placed randomly. This takes up a lot of space leaving a lot of white that the average designer would not do. All the information and imagery is placed at the bottom of the page. In overall, this piece is very simple but as simple as it is. I think it is quite eye catching, as the randomness of the layout would most likely intrigue most people thus making them read the text below.

Saul Bass designed this piece and is well known for his hand made posters. This poster uses a strong colour of red for its background colour. The entire thing seems as though it has been hand done with paper cutouts. The layout of text is quite simple but the unevenness makes it more visually appealing. The main image in this piece is quite interesting, as it would seem to be a paper cut out of a man in the middle of some sort of vortex. In my opinion, I think this piece is very simple but the bright red background catches the eye immediately. The intriguing image and text draws the target audience in, furthermore I think this piece is quite successful.

This piece uses a simple variety of colours such as black, white and two shades of blue. There is little information on the poster, the little information that is on the page is of an orange colour and has been placed in the middle of the page. This poster mainly consists of blocks that seem to have been hand cut. The imagery isn’t very complex as the main images are of a man and two women that have been placed around the edge of the poster. The only other image in this piece is a hand cutout of a crooked arm coming down out of one of the black blocks. I think this piece is quite effective but simple as the background only consist of hand cutout blocks, but as they are hand cut they seem a lot more intriguing than if they where neatly done by a computer. I think in overall that this piece is quite successful.

This piece consists of many different rectangular red blocks each with a different hand cut images inside. The colours used in this piece are very simple as there are only two colours in this piece such as red and black. The imagery is quite complex as each image has been hand cut, which gives of a good effect. I think that in overall this piece is quite simple as there isn’t that much to it. I think this piece is mainly for visual effect as there isn’t any information on it apart from Saul Bass’ name.
